Instead of instituting a fitting room minimum, add additional hooks and label them "love, maybe and no" to help customers organize their items and make it more likely for them to keep them neatly on hangers. Research helping small businesses to avoid scams by Curtin Business School is examining how often you fall victim to small business scams. Results in 2011 showed that while small businesses are a popular target for scammers, 1 in 8 small businesses surveyed could not actually identify whether or not they'd been scammed.  Project co-researcher & member of the Belmont BEC Management Board, Dr Louis Geneste, highlighted that the proportion of scammed small firms is higher than the general Australian population and also reported that research from the US showed 90% of the cost of online scams involving identity theft was borne by business.  One of the key aims of the research is to develop educational material for small business owners to help avoid exposure to scams. New retail trading hours in WA

As you’ve noticed, all general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area are now able to trade on Sundays 11am -5pm. Small business employers who choose to open on Sundays should consider the impact of these changes on employee pay rates. Contact Geoffrey for more info.

An American retailer called American Girl approach their market differently by adopting modern retailing techniques. Dolls, like many products, are now available online, but this company encourages its customers to walk into the store and spend at least $99 US on a doll and keep coming back to spend more. IBISWorld Reports – Australia’s Decline in Productivity

Belmont BEC is able to provide viewing of the IBISWorld Industry reports.  In their latest Newsletter Phil Ruthven  provides charts that show that in the last 5 years seven of the nation’s 19 industry divisions had negative performance headed by Mining (aggregate 51% decline) and Utilities (aggregate 35% decline) where wages have grown. The same cultural zeitgeist that gave us the metrosexual – the urban male obsessive about grooming and personal appearance – is also creating its digital equivalent: the datasexual. The datasexual looks a lot like you and me, but they are relentlessly digital, they obsessively record everything about their personal lives, and they think that data is sexy. For eg. What is the Microenterprise Loan Program?

This Loan is an unsecured business loan for those that are unable to access mainstream business finance.  The key features: Loans from $500 to $20,000; Interest Rate of 5.99% fixed; Up to 3 years repayment history; 90 day interest and repayment free access period; For businesses with five or fewer employees. Tax compliance for SME

The legislation has been introduced to expand the director penalty regime, making directors now personally liable for their company's unpaid superannuation guarantee amounts in addition to unpaid Pay As You Go ("PAYG") withholding tax obligations.

Changes to director’s personal liability for PAYG and SUPER 

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has outlined the SME behaviour that attracts their attention, and how they identify compliance risks. Examples include tax performance varying substantially from business performance; inconsistencies in activity statements or spikes in refund claims; and large, one-off or unusual transactions.

ASIC Roadshow for Business Names
The new register will enable 1.8 million current business name holders to register their name nationally through a simple and easy to use online service. Businesses will only need to register their name once, and will no longer be required to register separately in each state and territory they operate in. Existing business names currently registered in a state or territory will be automatically transferred to the new register. Ebay spills on sales
Leading online auction site Ebay has released its 2012 Online Business Index (OBI), revealing its top 2,000 sellers increased their revenue by 45 per cent last year, with almost 160 Australian businesses achieving over $1 million in sales.

Fashion Industry Code to be based on Global Compact Principles

The UN Global Compact announced a new collaboration with the Nordic Initiative Clean and Ethical (NICE) to develop a fashion industry code based on Global Compact principles. The code will be launched on 3 May 2012 in Copenhagen at the world’s largest summit on sustainability in fashion, the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, held under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Small Businesses urged to prioritise trade payments
